What is a mainframe computer

Mainframe is a very efficient computer system designed for performing complex calculations and for handling huge amount of data. Data such as census and population are so huge that a simple computer with limited processing capabilities could not handle. So, mainframe computers are the ones who are employed to handle such complex scenarios.

Mainframe computers are primarily created and maintained by IBM. IBM is the only company that has continuously upgraded the Mainframe systems as per the changing needs of the clients. Even though the revenue from Mainframe systems is not much for IBM, but still since they are the only players in the market, they are still the ultimate choice when there is a need of Mainframe system. Clients who deal in the Healthcare and Banking domain are usually in need of Mainframe systems as they need to process huge amount of data each second.

It was predicated a decade ago that Mainframe computers will be dead soon. But due to the increasing demand of Mainframe computers, it looks like Mainframe computers are going to stay there for another couple of  decades or so. This makes it obvious that there is an increasing need of Mainframe testers in the market both because there is not much talent available in this specific domain and because of the increasing demand of Mainframe computers by fortune 500 companies. In my upcoming posts, I will be discussing about various terminologies and processes involved in Mainframe testing. Stay tuned...
